When the Capitol opened in 1934, it soon became the premier entertainment place. Since the Capitol was completely renovated in 2008, it has enjoyed overwhelming popularity. The creative revival of this historic gem has been a labor of love, and its storied history and old Hollywood ambiance are wonderfully unique.

Our primary goal is to make our guests happy. We operate using the Walt Disney Institute principles of Courtesy, Efficiency, & Show, and our clients are stars of the show!

The site of the present Capitol Theatre was originally the WA Dunlap Building, built circa 1922. It was open as a furniture store and undertaking establishment. The building later housed the J.C. Penney Company until the company lost its lease circa 1934. Crescent Amusement Company then began construction of the Capitol Theatre that same year. Crescent owned a chain of theatres across the south. One of our sister theatres is the Capitol Theatre in Greenville, TN. The Capitol was the largest venue of three movie houses in downtown Maryville, seating just under 1000 people. The other two theaters were the present day Palace Theater, and the Park, which was in the building directly across the street, for years known as Roy's Records.

Typical of art deco style movie houses of that era, the Capitol was the premier entertainment venue for locals, where parents would often drop their children off for an afternoon of westerns while they shopped. The building's fly loft over the stage allowed the silver screen to retract in order to also accommodate live theater and musical performances. After it finally closed in the 1970's, the Capitol housed a variety of tenants, which included a record shop, disco, wedding dress store, and a sports collectibles shop.

Since the revival of this historic gem, the Capitol has enjoyed much success, and is particularly popular for private bookings. The Capitol has been featured in Southern Living magazine, Tennessee Crossroads, and is part of the Tennessee Heritage Trail. The Capitol has been awarded a Business Excellence Award by the Blount County Chamber of Commerce, and the Oak Shingle Award for outstanding restoration.

In 2008 the Capitol underwent a complete renovation. The sloped flooring in the main auditorium was tiered to accommodate a dinner theater format. State-of-the-art audio, video, and lighting equipment was installed. Other improvements include a coffee shop & ice cream parlor, and an art gallery which features the paintings of nationally recognized artist, Heath Claiborne.
